- Lessons learnt
The project was funded temporarily by Macmillan as a three year pilot project and sadly, despite its success, the Health Boards would not fund it permanently. Part of the reason for this was that enough staff in Hywel Dda were successfully upskilled to manage head and neck cancer patients locally so there was no longer a need for the specialist video consultation model from the specialist team in Swansea.
Access to dedicated VC equipment in suitable clinical environment.
The broad aims of the original project were to:
Improve communication between primary and secondary care
Clarify patient pathways
Implement network clinical priorities and commissioning frameworks for each cancer site
Ensure better integration of multidisciplinary teams
Improve joint commissioning and collaborative working
Provide seamless, consistent and well-coordinated services.
These were achieved over the term of the pilot.
